Washington DC Wildlife Trapper Tip of the Month:

Opossum Predators

It is true that opossums are small creatures. Due to the same reason, some people assume that opossums can have a large number of predators. This fact is not true at all. When you take a look at the list of predators that opossums have, you will notice that it is extremely small. This is something interesting to explore as well.

Opossums belong into the category of marsupials. The young opossums are carried in the pouch by their mothers. This is one of the biggest reasons on how the young opossums are capable of keeping themselves protected from predators. The level of protection that other marsupials such as kangaroos receive are experienced by opossums as well.

You will be able to discover many different variations of opossums species around the world. In fact, you can commonly find them in both North America as well as in South America. Even though opossums are similar to possums that can be found in Australia, you need to understand that these are two different animal varieties.

Some of the common four legged predators of opossums include bobcats, coyotes and foxes. However, the ability of opossums to run fast is providing them with enhanced protection against these predators at all times. This is something interesting that you need to keep in your mind about opossums. On the other hand, opossums are being killed by some of the predatory birds as well. Owls and hawks are a perfect example for such predatory birds.

Human beings are a threat to the opossum population that you can find in North and South America as well. That’s because some of the people groups are interested in consuming opossum meat. They catch opossums, kill them and consume the meat. They consider it as one of the most delicious meats available as well. However, the opossum population is not endangered due to this habit.

One of the best things that you can find in opossums is that they are really good at playing dead. You will be able to find opossums playing dead when they are being attacked by a predator. You will be able to find this characteristic in the possums as well. On the other hand, you need to understand that opossums are not animals who tend to attack other animals. The only trick that they use is playing dead.

In the meantime, it is worthy to know that opossums are omnivorous animals. In other words, they are consuming a variety of insects, vegetation and other animals. On the other hand, they will scavenge as well. They are in a position to eat dead things and carrion as well. Moreover, opossums that you can find in the urban areas are capable of consuming garbage that is being left by human beings. In case if you can see an opossum consuming garbage, you need to understand that it is scavenging.
